Umbrellaless

Earth’s canopy is pouring water
on its yearning carpets of brown,
as the dried foliage rustling under
my feet mutates into a slippery mire,
exhaling scents of wetlands blending
with city vapours arising from the hard
grey mantels of asphalt haughtily spewed
far and wide, artificial paving making way
to impatient drivers blaring
their horns to strangers a violence
to no avail, as I attempt to pay no heed
turning deaf ears, wet, bated breath,
zealous to reach my abode, moving
lights sporadic accidents I ignore,
redirecting my attention towards nature
deprived of other colours only roses
and evergreens linger on,
eager to draw in droplets, thirsty petals
vivify stretching roots into the depths
of thirstier impuissant soils.
While I deciduous creature quenched
find myself ineluctably submersed
by cats and dogs drenched
umbrellaless between,
a lesson given and a lesson learnt.
