Risk

From the day we are thrust into existence
We are served our first challenge a breath,
Slapped hard if we turn blue embraced
Kissed and cleaned when we finally inhale.
As we embark in our earliest adventure
Our steps we walk and topple though our falls
Do not dishearten us we try again, until we prevail,
Given a beat to a rhythm our body sways.
Emulating to learn growing up we play
Hurt ourselves in improbable ways, scars
All over our legs bruised knees we break a bone
Colour the plasters laughing the pain away
Mindlessly persisting to seek greater exploits,
Fear has yet not besieged us whilst curiosity
Commands our every move the next
The beginning of lifetime escapades.
Impatient and excited we aimlessly meander
Out of playgrounds through city roads into scary
Blind alleys, jump on rooftops run into the woods
Sometimes we even dare creeping into darkness,
Only to discover gape and marvel at all in awe
Grasp the mightiness of the divine pervading
Our surroundings until we suddenly get caught,
In a blink of an eye without even noticing
Within the intertwined nets of fear and precaution,
Led by a silenced hesitancy battening on adventures
Trading them for security we eventually comply,
Give up identity for recognition following the sole
Path presented to us as beneficial and sure,
Guaranteed to make us happy keep us safe despite
An uncomfortable stagnancy day by day
Swallowing bitter pills and an authentic human pride
Ending up wondering when how and why
Did we ever surrender to the ephemeral appeal
Of stability renouncing the intrepid nature
Of our venturesome and endeavouring kind.
